Description

STENTORIZE IT by try1 is a visionary reflective approach to the human movement in the Mediterranean.
The movement of people, ideas, cultures and goods have been a key feature of the Mediterranean.
We focused on two basic movements of people that recently shook the area: the Arab Spring, with the unprecedented use of social media and the massive movement of refugees, seeking safety on the Mediterranean coasts.
Inspiration comes from an illustration of protozoa (Stentor), observed by Ernst Haeckel (18th century). Stentors are heterotrophic monocytes with autonomous mobility in water, like the Mediterranean peoples.
The name comes from Stentora, Homer’s hero who, according to legend, had the vocal intensity of 50 people - a stentorian voice.
Our installation, a large 3-D panel carved in 2 pieces of Plexiglas (each piece have LED FLEX STRIP DIMMABLE support and DIMMER for LED 230 Volt), representing a cluster of STENTORA, as enlarged by microscope, is bilaterally surrounded by protozoa-shaped shadows, formed by clustered illuminated Stedora. Both move: our central panel, viewed with 3D glasses; and the STENTORA through vibration.
Surrounding the installation with sound bites of Arab Spring Protests, and rescue operations of refugees, accompanied  by mdj's circumflex TRY1 soundtrack

The movement in the installation is subtle but is there ... without movement there is no life...
The numerous «Stentora» reflect Mediterranean people: Each one of them with the strength of 50 they revolt, demonstrate, get organized through social media, get slaughtered, are drowned... they survive and with the strength of 50 hope...
Shadows, thrown by light from computer screens, mobiles and tablets, flow to join in formations; forms yet lost in the shadows of history.........
